When in target disk mode, you can access the contents of the hard drive of the iMac that is in target disk mode using another Mac, provided that the 2 Macs are connected with each other via  USB , USB - C or a thunderbolt cable. In simple words, once you enter the target disk mode on your iMac, it can be used as an external hard disk.  To enter Target Disk Mode,  When your iMac is off, press the power button while holding the "T" key on your Keyboard.  If your iMac is powered on, go to system settings, choose startup disk and select Restart in Target Disk Mode.  If you did not mean to put your iMac in Target Disk mode and encountered the screen with Thunderbolt, USB, or FireWire symbol , simply press and hold the power button until your iMac restarts.
